Gum disease, also called gingivitis and periodontal disease, has many causes. It is a particularly common affliction, with over 75% of adults suffering one way or another and, dentists have confirmed in recent years, an increasing number of children presenting with the symptoms.
These include inflammation of the mouth's soft tissue and gums which become puffy, purplish and easily bruised. If left over time, sufferers will see more discoularation here and gums will become painful and raw. Contrary to popular belief, gum disease is not only an affliction of the mouth, but can dramatically increase the chances of heart disease and stroke as well.
It is therefore necessary that sufferers take steps both to remedy their gingivitis and prevent it from returning in the future. In serious cases, medication will be prescribed by the dentist; however there are several other measures which can be taken outside the surgery, in the lifestyle of the patient. (more...)
