A Gingivitis Free Lifestyle

Gum disease, also called gingivitis and periodontal disease, has many causes. It is a particularly common affliction, with over 75% of adults suffering one way or another and, dentists have confirmed in recent years, an increasing number of children presenting with the symptoms.

These include inflammation of the mouth's soft tissue and gums which become puffy, purplish and easily bruised. If left over time, sufferers will see more discoularation here and gums will become painful and raw. Contrary to popular belief, gum disease is not only an affliction of the mouth, but can dramatically increase the chances of heart disease and stroke as well.

It is therefore necessary that sufferers take steps both to remedy their gingivitis and prevent it from returning in the future. In serious cases, medication will be prescribed by the dentist; however there are several other measures which can be taken outside the surgery, in the lifestyle of the patient.

It goes without saying that a good standard of oral hygiene is a must. It is necessary regularly to floss, brush teeth with a good toothpaste and rinse with an anti-bacterial mouthwash if possible. In addition to these familiar practices, a good diet in which vitamins and minerals play a principle role is also important.

Studies have shown that those with a high intake of Vitamin C in the form of raw vegetables and, popularly, fruit juices, can reduce the chances of contracting periodontal disease. With plenty of vitamins and minerals in stock, the body can effectively fight infection and heal wounds, both of which are key in combating gingivitis.
